Mahmoud Saïd’s latest series explores the relationship between art history and contemporary portraiture, bringing together elements of modernist abstraction and Renaissance painting. His works combine geometric structures with soft light and subtle shading, creating portraits that reference historical traditions while remaining firmly rooted in a contemporary visual language. Growing up in Alexandria, a city shaped by both Hellenistic heritage and the European modernity of the Belle Époque, has profoundly influenced his artistic vision. His background in architecture and engagement with archaeological research inform his approach to line, structure, and the deconstruction of form, as well as his interest in classical ideals. Through a careful balance of form, color, and composition, Saïd reinterprets traditional techniques within modern compositions, employing earthy tones, controlled contrasts of light and shadow, and simplified forms that echo both analytical construction and Cubist expression. The exhibition focuses on the female figure, presenting a range of individual presences defined by posture, expression, and visual structure rather than symbolism or narrative. By treating his subjects as individuals rather than ideals, Saïd creates portraits that invite reflection on representation, artistic process, and the continuing evolution of portraiture. Bridging historical references and contemporary practice, his work establishes a dialogue between past and present while exploring how classical traditions can be reimagined through a modern lens. Since 2022, Saïd has exhibited regularly at TAM Gallery, including participation in Artists of Tomorrow and the annual Cairo Art Fair.
